Shop Smart on a Budget

Shopping is so fun and is a great way to express yourself through fashion. I used to buy and donate clothes like CLOCKWORK. I was buying trendy pieces that would quickly go out of style and I hated it. I felt wasteful and I didn’t really love anything I owned.

Since then, I’ve discovered what works well for me in relation to purchasing clothes and I couldn’t resist sharing on here since I often get questions on the topic.

1. I buy NEUTRAL. If you peek into my closet, you’ll find a slew of black, white, gray and cream. This has been a game changer for me. It all goes together and I don’t have to worry about mixing and matching layers because they all mix and match interchangeably! If you are wanting a trendy piece or a pop of color, I recommend borrowing from a friend! It eliminates waste and I’m sure your friend would feel flattered you want to borrow theirs!

2. I save for what I absolutely LOVE. Sticking to a budget is hard enough, but it’s especially hard when clothing is your weakness. If you’re someone who has a hard time saying “no” to new clothes, stop window shopping! If that’s what is hurting your budget, find a new hobby. When you do find something you can’t live without, you will have saved for it, rather than spending the money on things you “kinda-sorta-maybe-think-you-like- but-ill-just-buy-it-and-see-how-i-feel-because-its-on-sale.”

3. Give yourself a clothing budget, even if you’re in debt. I know, I know. This might shock you. Even if you’re in debt, I recommend giving yourself a SMALL budget for clothing. You need it. It’s not realistic to think you’re going to go years without ever buying a clothing item. Having even a small budget for clothing gives you something to look forward to and teaches delayed gratification, a very lost skill in today’s culture. The key word for this budget is SMALL (if you’re in debt). Without this small budget, you’re likely to binge-shop and be more in debt than if you had set a small clothing budget.

Here are a few of my favorite shops that have gorgeous pieces that have stood the test of time in my wardrobe season after season.
